The 2012 Taylor County 5k Race for Literacy was held on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at the Reynolds Ball Park, South Liberty Street, Reynolds, Georgia. The race, the fifth in the series, is sponsored by the Taylor County Certified Literate Community Program and registered with the 2012 Run and See Georgia Grand Prix Series and the Macon Track Club’s Piedmont Sports Medicine Place Series.
Nathan Norton, 20, was the overall winner of the race with a time of 17 minutes, 23 seconds (picture shown below). The female winner was Heather Trana with a time of 20 minutes. Approximately 145 runners participated in the race.


On February 13, 2012, the Taylor County Certified Literate Commission was presented an award for collaborating with partners in their community to achieve a 14.9% increase in the number of GED® graduates between calendar years 2009 and 2010 within the small-size category of 201 or less graduates. The Taylor County Certified Literate Commission works closely with the Southern Crescent Technical College, Adult Education program. Much of the money raised by the organization is used for assisting students in paying for the GED® tests. Presenting the award was Ms. Billie Izard, Executive Director of the Certified Literate Community Program for the state of Georgia. Also present were: Mayor Harold Heath, Charlie Hicks, Evelyn Hicks, Opal Wilder, Debra Burnam, Annie Lee Shorter, Sarah Wilson, Sarah Mathis, Alton Ford, Calandra Troutman, Van Miller, Michael Dinkins, Darryl Little, Rhonda Jenkins, Amber Murphy and Melissa Gordon.

Kelsey Dawsey, Pike County's EAGLE nominee and Southern Crescent Technical College's EAGLE winner, went on to participate in the state's EAGLE Leadership Institute, where she was awarded the EAGLE Spirit Award. The Spirit Award is given annually to the EAGLE delegate that has been chosen by peers to represent Adult Education students statewide as an ambassador and spokesperson for literacy. The Leadership Institute recognizes and honors those students statewide who have demonstrated superior achievement in adult education classes and programs.
