The Dundee Community Association was recently selected as the Technical College Foundation Association (TCFA) statewide Benefactor of the Year for 2017 at the Leadership Conference Awards Ceremony held November 8, 2017 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Savannah.
The Dundee Community Association (DCA) was nominated for this honor by the Southern Crescent Technical College Foundation and was recognized in front of over 200 individuals from around the state.
“We are so thankful for the support of the Dundee Community Association and for their recent $1 million donation to Southern Crescent Technical College. They have been a partner with the College and the Foundation for many years and their support has had a significant impact on the students, faculty and staff, and the communities that we serve,” said Southern Crescent Technical College President Dr. Alvetta Thomas. “We are very appreciative of their commitment to the College and we are so pleased that they have received the recognition that they deserve by being selected as the statewide Benefactor of the Year.”
The purpose of TCFA’s Benefactor Award is to recognize the outstanding leadership and significant financial contributions made on behalf of the colleges within the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG). In a late 2016 meeting of the Executive Committee of the Southern Crescent Technical College Foundation, Trustee Tom Gardner announced that a donation of $1 million would be made by the Dundee Community Association to name the main building on the Griffin Campus the “Dundee Education Technology Center.”
The Dundee Community Association was founded in the 1940’s by Dundee Mills to provide benefit to its employees and the local community. Through the years, DCA provided scholarships and benevolence to Dundee Mills and Springs Industries employees and made significant annual contributions to many Spalding County charitable organizations. DCA has supported Southern Crescent Technical College for many years through donations to its educational programs. DCA members include Tom Gardner, Chairman; Elaine White, Secretary; and members Bob Scroggins, Harry Kierbow, Keith Brown and Keith Ervin.
DCA Chairman Tom Gardner accepted the award and stated, “I am honored on behalf of the Dundee Community Association to accept this award. We have been a long-term partner and supporter of Southern Crescent Technical College and its students we are pleased to be able to carry on the Dundee name with this gift. We are humbled by this recognition and thankful for the opportunities that it may provide.”
Each of the 22 Technical College Foundations in Georgia were given the opportunity to submit a recommendation for the Benefactor of the Year award. The TCFA Benefactor of the Year award is a way to recognize outstanding contributions that individuals and companies make to their local technical college foundations. The recipients of this award embody the ideals of philanthropy and leadership in the service to Georgia’s technical colleges. Benefactors are important advocates who help to build strong support for the college in its region and throughout the state and nation.
“The Southern Crescent Technical College Foundation has enjoyed tremendous support thanks to the Dundee Community Association and our other generous benefactors,” said SCTC Foundation Chairman Jack Smith. “These donations are helping to make good things happen at Southern Crescent Technical College.”
The Technical College System of Georgia Leadership Conference is held once a year and brings together the members of the State Board of the Technical College System of Georgia, the Technical College Directors’ Association and the Technical College Foundation Association, as well as the leadership of the Technical College System of Georgia and local technical colleges.
