SCTC Foundation Announces Spring 2017 Scholarship Recipients

The Southern Crescent Technical College Foundation awarded 73 scholarships totaling $30,050 for students enrolled in the College for Spring Semester 2017.

Of those, the Foundation awarded 44 Internal Tiger Campaign scholarships totaling $17,550.  Internal scholarships are funded from contributions from the SCTC faculty and staff primarily thorough monthly payroll deduction to the Internal Fundraising Campaign. In addition, the Foundation awarded 29 external scholarships totaling $12,500. External scholarships are funded from contributions from business partners, foundations and generous donors within our service community as well as SCTC faculty and staff for program-specific scholarships not included in the Internal Tiger Campaign.

The Bill Walden Memorial Textbook Scholarship is a $300 textbook scholarship established in memory of former SCTC Business Management instructor Bill Walden for his commitment and contributions to the College. The Foundation awarded 11 $300 scholarships for a total of $3,300.  Those receiving the scholarship for the Spring 2017 Semester are:

The GED/Advancement-to-College Textbook Scholarship is a $250 textbook scholarship awarded to a recent Southern Crescent Technical College GED graduate (completed within the last 12 months) who scored over 580 on the GED test and who has enrolled in Southern Crescent Technical College. The Foundation awarded three $250 scholarships for a total of $750.  Those receiving the scholarship for Spring 2017 Semester are:

The High School-to-College Textbook Scholarship is a $300 textbook scholarship awarded to a recent high school graduate (graduated within the last 24 months) who is enrolled at Southern Crescent Technical College. The Foundation awarded three $300 scholarships for a total of $900. Those receiving scholarships for the Spring 2017 Semester are:

The John Bradley Memorial Toolbox Scholarship is a $250 toolbox scholarship for the purchase of program-required tools, uniforms, equipment, and/or supplies established in memory of John Bradley, former Automotive Collision and Repair instructor at the College, who died of cancer in 2006. The Foundation awarded 13 $250 scholarships for a total of $3,250.  Those receiving the scholarship for the Spring 2017 Semester are:

The Trevor Alexander Memorial Tuition Scholarship is a $250 tuition, fees and/or books scholarship to a student who is eligible for the HOPE Grant/Scholarship but is not eligible for The PELL Grant. It was established in memory of Trevor Alexander, an Assessment Specialist at the College, who died of cancer in August 2013. The Foundation awarded five $250 scholarships for a total of $1,250.  Those receiving the scholarship for the Spring 2017 Semester are:

The SCTC Tuition Scholarship is a $900 tuition scholarship to a student who is not eligible for the HOPE Grant/Scholarship, WIOA and/or The PELL Grant. Applicants for this scholarship may also include those who have capped-out on HOPE financial aid. The Foundation awarded nine $900 scholarships for a total of $8,100l.  Those receiving the scholarship for the Spring 2017 Semester are:

The SCTC Culinary Arts Advisory Committee Tuition, Textbook & Toolbox Scholarship is a $250 tuition, textbook and toolbox scholarship awarded to student in the Culinary Arts program. Funds from the annual Food and Wine Pairing contribute to this scholarship. The Foundation awarded two $250 scholarships for a total of $500 to:

Culinary Arts Travel Abroad is a $1,500 tuition, textbook and toolbox scholarship which requires a bench test, essay and completed application for a SCTC student to attend culinary classes at Kendall College in England with funds raised by the SCTC Culinary Arts Advisory Committee. The Frank Jolly Memorial Business Management Scholarship is a $250 tuition and textbook scholarship to a student in a Business Management program. Established in memory of Victor Franklin Jolly, who retired after 41 years as a prominent banker and community leader. He served as president and Chief Executive Officer of Commercial Bank and Trust Company from 1974 until his retirement in 1991. This scholarship is provided through the generous donations of Mr. Jolly’s daughter, Nan Jolly Moore and her husband, Len Moore, both former employees of Griffin Technical College/Southern Crescent Technical College. Mr. Jolly passed away April 2011. The Foundation awarded a $250 scholarship to:

Kathleen Edmondson, Business Management and Accounting

 

The MAACA / Tim Derrick Memorial Scholarship is a $250 textbook and toolbox scholarship awarded to a student in an Air Conditioning Technology program. Established in memory of Tim Derrick, Chief HVAC inspector for the City of Atlanta, HVAC contractor, and HVAC instructor, who died of brain cancer in 2005, and was a longtime member of the Metropolitan Atlanta Air conditioning Contractors Association (MAACA). The Foundation awarded one $250 scholarship to:

Wesley Isibor, Heating and Air Conditioning Installation

 

The Justin Peeples Memorial CIS Scholarship is a $250 textbook and toolbox scholarship awarded to a student in the Computer Information Systems program. Established in memory of Justin Peeples, a Computer Network Specialist student at the College. Justin died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in 2011. The Foundation awarded one $250 scholarship to:

The Elmer L. Peters Memorial Law Enforcement Officer Scholarship is a $500 scholarship awarded for tuition and fees, program-required textbooks, uniforms, equipment, and/or supplies to a degree-seeking student in Criminal Justice Technology. Student must also be a post-certified officer currently serving in a law enforcement position. Established in memory of Elmer L. Peters, who retired after 25 years with the City of Dayton, Ohio, Police Department and 13 years with the Dekalb County Sheriff’s Office in Smithville, Tennessee. This scholarship reflects his firm support of higher education, and his thought that professional police officers need professional level education and training. Mr. Peters passed away May 2013. The Foundation awarded one $500 scholarship to:

The Schyla Avery Memorial Scholarship is a $250 scholarship awarded for the purchase of program required textbooks, uniforms, equipment, and/or supplies to a student pursuing a degree in Respiratory Care. Established in memory of Schyla Nicole Avery, who received an AAS degree in Respiratory Care from the College, and died in a tragic house fire in 2011. The Foundation awarded one $250 scholarship to:

The SCTC Medical Assisting Tuition, Textbook & Toolbox Scholarship is a $250 tuition, textbook and toolbox scholarship awarded to a student in the Medical Assisting program. The Foundation awarded one $250 scholarship to:

The Upson EMC Foundation Tuition, Textbook & Toolbox Scholarship is a $250 tuition, textbook and toolbox scholarship. Student must be a Georgia resident and must live in one of the six counties Upson EMC serves: Crawford, Pike, Meriwether, Talbot, Taylor and Upson. The Foundation awarded one $250 scholarship to:
