GRIFFIN, GA – Southern Crescent Technical College (SCTC) recently hosted its High School VEX Robotics Camp on the Griffin Campus, providing area high school students with an immersive week of hands-on engineering, programming, and robotics experiences.
The camp welcomed students from Ola High School along with several other students from the Griffin area. Throughout the week, participants designed, built, programmed, tested, and refined VEX robots while strengthening critical skills in teamwork, communication, engineering design, and problem-solving. Students also gained valuable experience that will give them a head start as they prepare for the upcoming VEX Robotics competition season.
Camp activities introduced students to the VEX Robotics competition game, engineering design principles, computer-aided design (CAD), and robot construction techniques before advancing to programming, testing, strategy development, scrimmage matches, and a mock tournament to simulate real competition.
Working in teams, students collaborated to design unique robot features, divide engineering tasks, troubleshoot challenges, and improve robot performance through iterative testing. Camp participants consistently identified building, programming, driving, and collaborating with teammates as highlights of the experience.
“The VEX Robotics Camp gives students an opportunity to experience engineering in a way that is engaging, collaborative, and fun,” said Richard Andrews, Vice President of Economic Development at Southern Crescent Technical College. “As students design, build, and program their own robots, they develop technical skills, confidence, creativity, and teamwork that prepare them not only for robotics competitions but also for future careers in Georgia’s growing advanced manufacturing, engineering, and technology industries.”
The camp was led by members of the Gremlin Robotics Foundation, who shared their expertise and mentored students throughout the week. Participants were introduced to every stage of the engineering design process while learning how innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement drive success in robotics and beyond.
Students also learned about opportunities to continue competing through Southern Crescent Technical College-sponsored VEX Robotics teams at Jackson High School, Ola High School, and Griffin High School, allowing them to continue developing their skills throughout the school year.
