SCTC Awards 53 Scholarships for Fall Semester

The Southern Crescent Technical College (SCTC) Foundation awarded 53 scholarships totaling $31,935 for students enrolled at SCTC for Fall 2025 semester. 13 of those scholarships awarded were from the college’s annual Internal Tiger Campaign. Tiger Campaign scholarships are funded through contributions from the SCTC faculty and staff. 40 external scholarships were awarded and those are funded through contributions from business partners, foundations and generous donors within our service community, as well as SCTC faculty and staff for program-specific scholarships not included in the Internal Tiger Campaign. This is a 20.5% increase in scholarships awarded compared to Fall 2024.

Scholarship applications for Spring semester are available online from September 1 – 30, 2025 at sctech.edu/scholarships.

The Tiger Campaign GED/Advancement-to-College Textbook and Toolbox Scholarship is a $250 textbook & toolbox scholarship awarded to a recent Southern Crescent Technical College GED graduate (completed within the last 24 months) who is enrolled at Southern Crescent Technical College. The scholarship is for the purchase of program-required textbooks, tools, uniforms, equipment, and/or supplies. The Foundation awarded two $250 scholarships for a total of $500. The students receiving the scholarships for Fall 2025 semester are Samantha Cowart and Ashleigh Garcia.

The Tiger Campaign Textbook & Toolbox Scholarship is a $250 textbook & toolbox scholarship for the purchase of program-required textbooks & tools, uniforms, equipment, and/or supplies. The Foundation awarded five $250 scholarships for a total of $1,250. The students receiving scholarships for Fall 2025 Semester are Ashley Graham, George Castro, Jonathan Lopez, Karalyn Morgan, and Kteonia Gunder.

The Surfing Tigers Tuition Scholarship is a $900 tuition scholarship for a student who is not eligible for the HOPE Grant/Scholarship, WIOA and/or the Pell Grant and/or any other financial aid. The Tiger Campaign Surfing Tigers is named in honor of the winning team for the Internal Tiger Campaign for Southern Crescent Technical College. The Foundation awarded two $900 scholarships for a total of $1,800. The students receiving scholarships for Fall 2025 semester are Taylor Rollins and Ashlie Alston.

The Tiger Campaign Tuition Scholarship is a $250 tuition scholarship for a student in a certificate, diploma, or degree program at Southern Crescent Technical College. The Foundation awarded four $250 scholarships for a total of $1,000. The students receiving scholarships for Fall 2025 semester are Kyle York, Avery Oglesby, Laniah Smalls, and Sherry McNeal-Ford.

The Dr. Alvetta Peterman Thomas and A.J. Thomas Memorial Tuition Scholarship is a $250 tuition scholarship for a student in a certificate, diploma, or degree program.  Dr. Thomas was President of Southern Crescent Technical College from 2016-2021 and took pride in building strong students, strong careers, and strong communities. Her husband, A.J., was a lifelong proponent of education who believed that education improved the quality of life for individuals and communities. The Foundation awarded one $250 scholarship for Fall 2025 semester to Susy Warner.

The Bowdoin Medical Scholarship is a $500 tuition scholarship for a Southern Crescent Technical College student enrolled in a diploma or degree medical field of study. This scholarship is named in memory of Southern Crescent Technical College Foundation Chair Jack Bowdoin’s father and mother and his brother and sister-in-law. The Foundation awarded one $500 scholarship for Fall 2025 semester to Hannah Vick.

The Civil Engineering/Engineering Technology Scholarship is a $1,000 tuition, textbook & toolbox scholarship awarded to a student in the Civil Engineering Technology program. The scholarship, funded by the Georgia DOT, was given to SCTC from the Technical College System of Georgia because we offer a Civil Engineering Technology program. The Scholarship is for tuition, the purchase of program-required textbooks and tools, uniforms, equipment, and/or supplies. Once awarded, funds are split with $500 applied to tuition and $500 applied to textbook and toolbox expenses. The Foundation awarded one $1,000 scholarship for Fall 2025 semester to Victoria Johnson.

The Cooper Family Culinary Arts Tuition Scholarship is a $250 scholarship awarded to a student in the Culinary Arts program, currently enrolled part-time or full-time in good academic standing. The Foundation awarded one $250 scholarship for Fall 2025 semester to Destinie Helms.

The Gene Haas Foundation Machine Tool Technology Scholarship is a scholarship awarded to a student in their second semester or higher of the CNC Technology major for the purchase of a Machine Tools. Gene Haas is the American founder, president, and sole stockholder of the Haas Automation, a CNC machine tool manufacturer. The Foundation awarded two $750 scholarships for a total of $1,500.  The students receiving the scholarships for Fall 2025 semester are James Floyd and Robert Redmond.

The Georgia Power Company Scholarship is a $250 textbook and toolbox scholarship funded by the Georgia Power Company for the purchase of program-required tools, uniforms and/or equipment. The Foundation awarded two $250 scholarships for a total of $500. The students receiving the scholarships for Fall 2025 semester are Stephanie Miller and Ashley Savage.

The Griffin Utility Club ASN Tuition, Textbook and Toolbox Scholarship is a $500 tuition, textbook and toolbox scholarship for a female ASN student who is a Spalding County resident and enrolled in Southern Crescent Technical College. $250 of the funds will be applied to tuition, and $250 will be applied to the bookstore for course-required textbooks and/or tools. The Griffin Utility Club was a former service organization that supported the needs of Spalding County and especially the nursing needs. The Foundation awarded three $500 scholarship for a total of $1,500. The students receiving the scholarships for Fall 2025 semester are Kathryn Rehome, Rachel Jeane, and Amber Solorzano.

The Justin Peeples Memorial Textbook and Toolbox CIS Scholarship is a $250 textbook and toolbox scholarship awarded to a student in the Computer Information Systems program. Established in memory of Justin Peeples, a Computer Network Specialist student at the College. Justin died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in 2011. The Foundation awarded one $250 scholarship for Fall 2025 semester to Alondra Barcelo.

The Lespedeza Fund Scholarship, honoring the memory of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Allen and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Johnson, is a $1,400 tuition, textbook & toolbox need-based scholarship awarded to a first-generation student (defined as a student whose parent(s)/legal guardian(s) have not completed a degree or any education beyond high school, and are the first in their family to attend college to attain a certificate, diploma or degree) enrolled in one of the following programs: Allied Health, Business Technology, Criminal Justice, Industrial Systems Technology, and Logistics and Supply Chain Management. The Foundation awarded seven $1,400 scholarships for a total of $9,800. The students receiving scholarships for Fall 2025 semester are Caitlyn Tillman, Neshawn Reid, Tawanna Pryor, Deborah Kinsey, Lawson Stewart, Tashay Gadson, and America Gomez.

The NBRC Respiratory Scholarship is awarded to a student in the Respiratory Care AAS degree program. The scholarship will pay up to $905 for the following Respiratory expenditures: GA RCP license ($150), TMC exam ($190), Clinical Simulation exam ($200), and Kettering National Seminar ($365). Established by the National Board of Respiratory Care for education programs across the United States as part of its continued goal to raise awareness of the value of the respiratory care profession and recruit and retain more respiratory therapists. The Foundation awarded seven $905 scholarships for a total of $6,335. The students receiving scholarships for Fall 2025 semester are Alana Laidford, Akia Underwood, Robin Mark, Rebecca Taylor, Trinity Weaver, Kristal Storr and Pierre Lucien Jean.

The Penny Wilson “Flamingo” Scholarship is a $250 textbook & toolbox scholarship for a student in the Cosmetology program. Penny served the Griffin and surrounding communities for over 37 years with her wonderful laugh, heart of service and gift of making others not only look beautiful, but also feel beautiful. She was a graduate and recipient of the technical education here at our college, then Griffin Technical Institute. Penny had a passion not only for the beauty industry but for all who traveled her journey with her. Penny allowed herself and others to dream with their eyes wide open. The Foundation awarded one $250 scholarship for Fall 2025 semester to Cally Cook.

The Sara Jane Lofton Gatlin Nursing Scholarship is a $1,000 scholarship ($500 for two semesters) for a student who has been accepted into the Practical Nursing Program or the Associate of Science Nursing Program.  In order for the student to receive the second semester $500 award, the student must have achieved a 2.5 GPA or higher for the semester of the first award.  The scholarship will allow the student to use the funds for tuition, textbooks, equipment, or a licensure examination.  Recipients must be a resident of Spalding, Upson, or Pike county. A 250-word essay on “The Role of Education in Changing My Life Circumstances” must accompany the scholarship application. The Foundation awarded one $1,000 scholarship, ($500 for 2025 Fall semester and $500 for 2025 Spring semester) to Zykeria Clemons.

The Schyla Avery Memorial Textbook & Toolbox Scholarship is a $250 scholarship awarded for students pursuing a degree in Respiratory Care. This scholarship was established in memory of Schyla Nicole Avery, who received an AAS degree in Respiratory Care from the College, and died in a tragic house fire in 2011. The Foundation awarded one $250 scholarship for Fall 2025 semester to Shambria Davis.

The SCTC Culinary Arts Advisory Committee Tuition, Textbook and Toolbox Scholarship is a $500 scholarship awarded to a student in the Culinary Arts program who has completed CUUL 1000, 1110, and 1120. The student must have a minimum 3.0 GPA cumulative average. The student must provide the name of an SCTC Culinary Arts instructor who will be contacted on their behalf for a letter of recommendation. Scholarship is for tuition and the purchase of program-required textbooks, tools, uniforms, equipment, and/or supplies. Once awarded, funds are split with $250 applied to tuition and $250 applied to textbook and toolbox expenses. The Foundation awarded one $500 scholarship for Fall 2025 semester to Destinie Helms.

The Shop with a Sheriff Tuition, Textbook & Toolbox Scholarship is a $500 tuition, textbook & toolbox scholarship for an SCTC student who is a Fayette County, Georgia resident. Half of the funds, $250, will be applied to tuition and $250 will be applied to the bookstore for course-required textbooks and/or tools. The Foundation awarded two $500 scholarships for a total of $1,000.  The students receiving the scholarships for Fall 2025 semester are Tryphaina Hunter and Timothy Thorpe.

The Southern Contractors Association Textbook and Toolbox Scholarship is a $250 textbook & toolbox scholarship for the purchase of program-required textbooks & tools, uniforms, equipment, and/or supplies. This scholarship is for students in a Technical & Industrial program directly related to the building industry. The Foundation awarded one $250 scholarship for Fall 2025 semester to Corey Sylvester.

The Spalding County Pickleball Association Practical Nursing Tuition Scholarship is a $500 tuition scholarship awarded to a student in the Practical Nursing program. The Spalding County Pickleball Association is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization promoting and growing pickleball for the betterment of our community through active lifestyle, health & well-being, exercise and fitness, sports tourism, and economic impact. The Foundation awarded one $500 scholarship for Fall 2025 semester to Lizeria Miller.

The Trevor Alexander Memorial Tuition Scholarship is a $250 tuition scholarship awarded to any student. This scholarship was established in memory of Trevor Alexander, an Assessment Specialist at the College, who died of cancer in August 2013. The Foundation awarded one $250 scholarship for Fall 2025 semester to Brittany Khan.

The Upson EMC Foundation Tuition Scholarship is a $250 tuition scholarship. Student must be a Georgia resident and must live in one of the five counties Upson EMC serves: Crawford, Pike, Meriwether, Talbot, and Upson. The Foundation awarded three $250 scholarships for a total of $750.  The students receiving the scholarships for Fall 2025 semester are Rachel Greenwood, Caden Price, and Gavin Hammock, Jr

The Walker Cook Memorial Tuition Scholarship is a $250 tuition scholarship established in memory of Walker Cook who passed away in 2017, and was a former Griffin resident and husband of Barbara Jo Cook, retired V.P. for Advancement at SCTC. Walker was a life-long educator who believed education improved the quality of life for individuals and communities. The Foundation awarded one $250 scholarship for Fall 2025 semester to Asia Whatley.

The William R. and Sara Babb Smith Foundation Scholarship is a $500 tuition, textbook and toolbox scholarship is for a Southern Crescent Technical College student who is a Henry County resident. $250 of the funds will be applied to the bookstore for course-required textbooks and/or tools and $250 of the funds will be applied towards tuition. The Williams R. and Sara Beth Smith Foundation’s main focus is in the areas of education, youth development, and community service in Henry County. The Foundation awarded one $500 scholarship for Fall 2025 semester to Regina Dowdell.
