THOMASTON, Ga. — Southern Crescent Technical College recently hosted a successful VEX AIR Drone Camp at its Flint River Campus, introducing seven students to the exciting world of drone technology through a week of hands-on learning, innovation, and STEM exploration.
Held July 6–10 at the Flint River Campus in Thomaston, the free camp provided participants with an engaging opportunity to learn how unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) are transforming industries while developing valuable technical and problem-solving skills. Throughout the week, students worked with VEX AIR drones, learning the fundamentals of safe drone operation, aviation safety and FAA awareness, technology applications, and data collection techniques.
The seven students spent each day building confidence as they learned to safely pilot drones, complete flight challenges, collaborate with classmates, and apply critical thinking skills through interactive activities led by SCTC instructors. The camp emphasized teamwork, creativity, and innovation while exposing participants to technology used across a variety of high-demand industries.
“The VEX AIR Camp gave students the opportunity to explore emerging technology in a fun, hands-on environment,” said Dr. Irvin T. Clark III, President of Southern Crescent Technical College. “Programs like this spark curiosity, build confidence, and introduce students to career pathways that are shaping the future workforce. We are proud to provide opportunities that encourage innovation and prepare young learners for success.”
Drone technology continues to play an increasingly important role across industries including agriculture, public safety, construction, logistics, filmmaking, environmental science, advanced manufacturing, and infrastructure inspection. By introducing students to these technologies early, SCTC is helping prepare the next generation for careers in high-demand STEM fields.
“Economic development begins with developing talent,” said Richard Andrews, Vice President of Economic Development at Southern Crescent Technical College. “The VEX AIR Camp exposed seven students to technologies that are transforming industries while helping them build critical thinking, teamwork, and technical skills. Experiences like these inspire young people to explore careers in STEM and advanced technology, creating a stronger workforce for our communities and region.”
The VEX AIR Drone Camp is one of several youth STEM initiatives offered through Southern Crescent Technical College to strengthen workforce development and increase awareness of career opportunities in advanced technology. By connecting students with emerging technologies through hands-on experiences, the college continues to inspire future innovators while supporting the workforce needs of the region.
Southern Crescent Technical College extends its appreciation to the seven students and their families, as well as the instructors and staff who made this year’s VEX AIR Drone Camp a success. The college looks forward to continuing to provide engaging educational opportunities that prepare learners for tomorrow’s careers.
