The Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG), Apprentice Georgia, and Southern Crescent Technical College (SCTC) have partnered with five local public and private organizations to secure grant funding for several apprentices through two key workforce development initiatives. Through the Public Service Apprenticeship Program (PSAP), Henry County Government, Henry County Sheriff’s Office, and the Southern Crescent Technical College Police Department have each partnered with SCTC and been awarded grants to launch or enhance U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL) registered apprenticeship programs. These grants will help provide essential education and training for careers in high-demand industries, ensuring a stronger, more skilled workforce for the region.

Dr. Irvin Clark, SCTC President, worked diligently with Apprentice Georgia and TCSG on this project, “This is a wonderful initiative that is not only helping local communities but also fostering strong partnerships between public and private organizations. It’s exciting to see the collaborative effort between the TCSG, Apprentice Georgia, and local employers to create these apprenticeship opportunities.”

PSAP also offers contract awards per apprentice to public service employers at the state, city, and local levels, promoting the establishment and expansion of registered apprenticeship programs across Georgia. “The approval of the Public Safety Apprenticeship Program is a game-changer for Henry County,” said Sheriff Reginald B. Scandrett of the Henry County Sheriff’s Office. “This initiative will equip the next generation with hands-on experience, mentorship, and a clear path to a career in public safety.”

“The Southern Crescent Technical College Apprenticeship Program is a testament to Henry County’s dedication to building a stronger, safer community,” said Henry County Board of Commissioners Chair’s Carlotta Harrell. “By partnering with Southern Crescent Technical College, we are creating valuable opportunities for individuals to gain the skills and training needed for successful careers in parks and recreation, facilities maintenance, and the sheriff’s office. This program not only helps ensure that our public services and public safety infrastructure remain strong, but it also provides local options for continued education and career advancement. By investing in our local talent, we are helping to keep skilled professionals right here in Henry County, strengthening our workforce and our community.”

Henry County Manager Cheri Hobson-Matthews worked closely on the project to obtain apprentice positions with both the Henry County Government and with the Henry County Sheriff’s Office. “Henry County is committed to investing in the future of our workforce by providing meaningful career pathways in public service,” said County Manager Cheri Hobson-Matthews. “Through our partnership with Southern Crescent Technical College, the Apprenticeship Program offers hands-on training and professional development opportunities for individuals pursuing careers in parks and recreations and facilities maintenance. This initiative not only strengthens our workforce but also ensures that our public service infrastructure remains well-maintained to support the needs of our community.”
