Southern Crescent Technical College is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Alvin C. Harmon as the new Vice President for Academic Affairs. Dr. Harmon brings more than two decades of distinguished experience in higher education leadership, instructional innovation, and workforce development to this role. He most recently served as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at Central Georgia Technical College (CGTC), where he gained extensive experience in donor engagement, apprenticeship expansion, articulation agreements with four-year universities, and securing grant funding from nonprofit organizations. Prior to that role, Dr. Harmon served as the Dean of Health Sciences at the institution. During his tenure as Dean, he led a variety of health science programs across multiple campuses, strengthened partnerships with local healthcare providers, and championed student success through data-informed academic strategies. Under his leadership, the Health Sciences Division achieved multiple program accreditations and improved retention rates in the Practical Nursing and Allied Health programs.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Harmon has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to educational access, student achievement, and the development of Georgia’s skilled workforce. His previous leadership roles at Atlanta Metropolitan State College included Department Head for Science and Health Professions and Interim Dean for Science and Health Professions, where he expanded enrollment in biological sciences, increased grant funding, and cultivated partnerships with organizations such as the Grady School of Radiology Technology and the National Science Foundation. Dr. Harmon’s experience in managing multimillion-dollar federal grants, including NSF and NASA-funded programs, reflects his deep understanding of academic innovation and resource stewardship.
A proud graduate of Morehouse College, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology (Cum Laude), Dr. Harmon went on to receive his Doctor of Philosophy in Biology (Neuroscience) from Georgia State University. His research and publications have contributed to the fields of neuroendocrinology and behavioral neuroscience, and his professional development includes serving as a SACSCOC evaluator, NSF grant reviewer, Executive Leadership Institute Scholar through the University System of Georgia, and a member of the Senior Leadership Academy 2024 cohort with the Technical College System of Georgia. His leadership philosophy centers on the belief that higher education plays a vital role in “Helping Georgians, Help Georgia” — a guiding principle that aligns perfectly with the Technical College System of Georgia’s mission.
In his new role, Dr. Harmon will oversee all academic divisions at Southern Crescent Technical College, ensuring alignment between institutional goals, workforce needs, and student success. He will work closely with faculty, staff, and community partners to promote excellence in teaching and learning while advancing the college’s commitment to innovation, equity, and economic development across the region.
“I am thrilled to welcome Dr. Harmon to the Southern Crescent Technical College leadership team,” said Dr. Irvin Clark, President of Southern Crescent Technical College. “His extensive experience in academic affairs, technical education, and workforce development, along with his passion for student success, make him an outstanding addition to our college. I am confident that his leadership will further strengthen our academic programs and expand opportunities for students across our service area.”
Dr. Harmon’s appointment marks an exciting step forward as Southern Crescent Technical College continues to enhance academic excellence, expand workforce partnerships, and empower students to achieve their educational and career goals.
