Betsy Thoms Named SCTC’s Adult Education Outstanding Teacher of the Year

Southern Crescent Technical College is excited to announce that Fayette County English as a Second Language (ESL) instructor, Elizabeth “Betsy” Thoms, was chosen as Adult Education’s Outstanding Teacher of the Year (OTOY). Mrs. Thoms was nominated by her peers at the College for this honor.

The Adult Education OTOY program is designed to recognize and honor our most outstanding Adult Education teachers who make significant contributions to the field through instruction, innovation, and leadership. These outstanding teachers participate in school and community activities, they understand the importance of and are committed to the Adult Education profession, and they exemplify excellence. The OTOY has a deep commitment to the mission of the Office of Adult Education (OAE).

Mrs. Thoms began working as a part-time instructor with the program at Southern Crescent Technical College and transitioned to a full-time position in 2014. Since then, she has been a shining example of a caring instructor that is willing to go the extra mile to ensure that her students have the greatest chance for success. She worked diligently to become the area expert in BEST Plus and provides exceptional face-to-face and online training for our ESL students.

The OAE Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award Winner serves as a professional-level ambassador for Adult Education in Georgia as the TCSG OAE’s Outstanding Teacher of the Year . S/he makes many public appearances (virtual or in-person) throughout the year, including presenting before the TCSG State Board, college presidents, city/state officials, the General Assembly of the State of Georgia and other speaking engagement opportunities in order to promote Adult Education
